ARBURG, probably the biggest injection-molding specialized company in the world has made the big step into 3D printing. During the K Show in Dusseldorf they unveiled their 3D printer The Freeformer, bringing a totally new (patented) 3D printing technology. Their process produces parts using plastic droplets. The material for these droplets are exactly the same as standard granulates used for injection molding. So there are no additional, special (expensive) materials required. The 3D printer melts these granulates exactly the same way as the ARBURG injection molding machines do.

During printing, the nozzle remains stationary and the component is moved around. Here you can choose to work around three axes or five axes. Using the five axes, undercuts can be realised immediately and there are no support structures needed! ARBURG also claims that the prints do not even need finishing work.
