About a week ago Pirate3D launched a Kickstarter campaign for their new 3D printer, the Buccaneer. They had set their goal at $100,000 and now they’ve already exceeded the $500,000 mark. Because they succeeded to get so much pledged, Pirate3D decided to donate ten Buccaneer 3D printers to African institutions.

So, how did they get this amount of money so fast? I think it is the perfect combination of affordability, design and usability they managed to put into the Buccaneer. Their aim is to remove all doubts whether the 3D printer is suitable to be used at home. They are sure it is, and their Buccaneer shows it can be.

They early pledgers (the first 360) get the Buccaneer 3D printer for $274. The normal retail price of the printer will be $347. Even the normal retail price is a steal when you compare it to other (similar) 3D printers. On their Kickstarter page, they did this with the Makerbot Replicator 2:

Besides the 3D printer, Pirate3D also posted a video showing their new Smart Objects application (beta). This application is also all about usability. You don’t need any knowledge of CAD software to start creating.

Congratulations to Pirate3D for reaching their goal so fast! This is a promising company with a great vision.
